＜外部形態＞

　全長 67 mm (Gates, 1932a)、体幅 5 mm (Gates, 1932a)、体節数 118 (Gates, 1932a)。

　剛毛は第 20 体節で 59 本 (Gates, 1932a)。雄性孔間剛毛は 12 本 (Gates, 1932a)。第一背孔は第 12/13 体節間溝。

　性徴はとても小さく、第 8、17-19 体節に存在する。第 8 体節には、剛毛線より前に 10 個、後方に 8 個性徴がある (Gates, 1932a)。第 17 体節には性徴が 4 列あり、2 列は剛毛線より前に、2 列は剛毛線より後ろにある。第 18 体節では、剛毛線より前に 1 列に 11 個の性徴がある。第 19 体節では、剛毛線より前に 2 個の性徴がある。

　国外では、ミャンマー (Gates, 1932a)、台湾 (Michaelsen, 1922; 小林, 1938d, e, 1940a, c, d; Shih et al., 1999; Huang et al., 2006; Tsai et al., 2009) に分布する。

　Gates (1960c) は、本種を単為生殖が疑われる種としている。

　rockefelleri に似るが、より小型であること、性徴が極めて小さく数も多いこと、第 8、17、18 体節 (時に第 19 体節) の腹面に不規則に横に配列している点が異なる (小林, 1938d)。基亜種 papulosus の性徴は亜種 sauteri よりも多く、前者は各体節 50 個、後者は約 15-20 個 (小林, 1938d)。

　Michaelsen (1922) は、性徴の個数が少ないこと、腸盲嚢の位置が異なること、摂護腺を欠くこと、受精囊の副嚢の形状が異なることから変種 sauteri を記載したが、近年では亜種としての分化は認められていない (Gates, 1972; Easton, 1981; Blakemore, 2003)。

　なお、Ohfuchi (1956) の記載した var. sauteria [sic] は、性徴が雄性孔に隣接して 1 個しか無く、本種の特徴と一致せずにハワイミミズであると考えられる。他に日本国内における本種の記録がないため、スマトラミミズは日本産ミミズリストから削除すべきである。
